Anglian Windows - are they any good?

We have had about five cold calls over the last 12 months from Anglian Windows, asking if we need any more services from them. Yes please. We bought our home with Anglian double glazed uPVC windows aready fitted. Not that we would have chosen uPVC windows ourselves, because of the toxicity of waste uPVC, certainly through ingestion of the phthalates leaching from PVC (not that we lick our window frames much) and arguably because of the dioxins given off when PVC is manufactured and burned.

So we've got uPVC windows, and we're not going to change them. However, they are not well sealed in to the walls. This was a problem that showed soon after installation, and it still causes mould problems. So when they phoned to ask if they could interest us in their products, we said yes, please, can you come and fix the leaks. After the fourth call, they said are they still in the guarantee period? Yes they were. And did we notify Anglian when we purchased the house that we had made the purchase? No? Then the guarantee is now invalid.

I fail to see why the guarantee should be specific to the houseowner. The item being guaranteed is the physical window, not the human owner.

But no. That is the rule of Anglia. Their guarantee falls when the house changes hands, unless the new owner notifies them within 3 months.

Well thanks, Anglia. I'm not going to go to the courts, though my survivors may do so if I fall off the ladder and die when I'm up there with the caulk gun sealing up the defects in the Anglian work. And I'm going to leave this up here on the Web, so that any potential Anglian customers who Google "Anglian windows - are they any good?" will be able to make a good, well informed choice.

There's a new trend amongst switched-on companies to watch blogs and Twitter etc to find people who were having trouble with Anglian's service, and helping them get it sorted. The idea being to promote good feelings toward the company by helping people who were vocal about their problems.

Anglian don't do this, but I've kept the alerts I set up when I was pitching it to them, just to see what came up. I just thought I'd post this comment so that you know people do watch - and also, so that if Anglian ever do come to their senses they'll know what they were missing. Eventually, I hope all companies will keep on top of this kind of thing.

    Good luck fixing your windows!

Kraxpelax, I'll let your personal announcement stand as you seem to be harmless...

  4. UPVC doors and windows are weatherproof, virtually maintenance free, modern design styled and many other reasons had made them popular.

  5. OK, but UPVC has a disposal problem, and the fact remains that my Anglian leak around the joints between the masonry and the window frames, and Anglian have refused to honour their guarantee because the house changed hands.
