Methane leaking from Arctic seabed

Scientists have uncovered what appears to be a further dramatic increase in the leakage of methane gas that is seeping from the Arctic seabed.

Methane is about 20 times more potent than CO2 in trapping solar heat.
Levels found are 1000 times greater than background.


The release of frozen methane is one of the "tipping points" or positive feedback mechanisms that could lead to runaway global warming.

This is why we must hope that solar variation has a greater effect than is estimated by the atmospheric scientists, while acting on the assumption that it does not.
