At last, Britain, France and Canada are beginning to realise that their support for Netanyahu’s criminal and genocidal campaign since October 7th 2023 is a mistake. At last, Netanyahu is being shown that he has destroyed not just 50,000+ lives, but also that he has managed to destroy a significant part Israel’s political influence in the world.
In response to the statement by Starmer, Macron and Carney Netanyahu said “By asking Israel to end a defensive war for our survival before Hamas terrorists on our border are destroyed and by demanding a Palestinian state, the leaders in London, Ottawa and Paris are offering a huge prize for the genocidal attack on Israel on October 7 while inviting more such atrocities."
This statement is a lie of Trumpian proportions.
Netanyahus bombing is not defensive, it is aggressive. He could have defended Israel by listening to the warnings of Mossa, Egypt, and his own border watchers about Hamas’ preparations for Oct7, and prevented Hamas’ atrocity. He did not.
Defence against Hamas would have meant flushing Hamas fighters out of their tunnels by simply by introducing offensive gas, and fighting them, soldier to soldier, as they emerged. He did not. Instead he chose to inflict collective punishment on the ordinary people of Gaza.
Netanyahu’s s orgy of destruction over the last 20 months is not a defence of Israel, it is a potent creation of the next wave of hatred, the next insane attack against the people of Israel. He has alienated world opinion, and has unravelled a huge proportion of international sympathy for his country.
Moreover, by characterising Hamas’ attack as “genocidal” he has clearly scored an own goal, because proportionally, as a percentage of their respective populations, his own attack has caused a death rate almost 200 times higher than Hamas’ attack. Netanyahu is flailing. His only remaining rationale for continuing his violence is to keep himself out of court on charges of fraud and corruption, compounded now with charges of war crimes.
What is the solution? Justice demands that Netanyahu should be tried and spend the rest of his life in prison, but justice in IsraelPalestine is a rare commodity. The more strongly we hold our for justice, the more desperately Netanyahu will cling to power.
The political solution is that Netanyahu and his chief supporters be treated as Idi Amin was treated. The criminal leadership should be offered a choice: stay in power until you are removed and put you on trial, or step down and accept exile from Israel back to any countries that might be prepared take you.
The exile option will seem repugnant to those who seek justice, but is perfect justice worth a continuation of Netanyahu’s atrocities?
