Twitter censors hashtags - the evidence

Twitter has a Trend list that is supposed to show the ten most frequent topics being tweeted.

Right now, (10:40am), Vince Cable is in 7th spot, on account of his tardy tax payments.

#OccupyOakland is a very busy hashtag, on account of the cowards in the Oakland Police attacking non-violent demonstrators with tear gas and rubber bullets.

I set up two tag pages alongside each other, both on Twitter, and set one going to collect #OccupyOakland tweets, and another to collect Vince Cable tweets.

Right now, ten minutes later, the #OccupyOakland tweets come in at 159, and Vince has 92 tweets.

Yet Vince is on the Twitter trending list, and #OccupyOakland is not.

I have run this test before with the same results: politically sensitive topics do not make it to the Twitter trend lists.

The question is, who censors Twitter? Is this a voluntary self-censorship, or does some Government agency visit them at their offices and sit on their desks?

Whatever the explanation, it stinks.

Daily Express blocks comment on their AGW stance

Great!
I was going to add a comment to the Daily Express piece about the slowing of global warming.
On logging in, I get this message:

Iceland protests disappear from view

BBC News yesterday was headlining an item on a demonstration outside the Icelandic Parliament calling for the resignation of the Government and a new election. Part of the crowd split off to demand the release of a protester who had been arrested. Police used pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Normally, you would expect a TV story to be carried in the newspapers. Today, it is in the UK newspapers. You have to search "Iceland protest" to find the item on the BBC site. The Guardian - nothing on headlines or search. Annanova - nothing. Times on Line, Independent, Telegraph - nothing on search.

However, the news is carried in the Scotsman, CNN, and news in NZ and OZ.

So, it would appear that a certain amount of news management has been taking place. Iceland is a stable, mature democracy ranking in the top group of the PTS scale for 2006., so it is a matter of more significance than if it had occurred in a more backward country like the UK.

Who, how, when &c does this news management take place in the UK? I take a desultory look at the D-notice website, but cannot be bothered to look for anything specifically preventing reporting of Icelandic riots, because it would be naive to expect that kind of transparency.

Governments rightly fear that economic dissatisfaction will lead to loss of control, and I suppose they fear that reports of disturbances in Iceland may give other people the same idea. So they manage the media, and would like to manage the web also.

The Memory Hole is a website that caches material that the rulers would prefer that you forgot.

Search Technorati...

...and you may not find what you are looking for. I used the search box (over there on the right, where it says "Technorati search") ofr "Opium" on this blog, and I got nothing. But I knew I had blogged on this, so I searched my backups and found 2 pieces written in February 2006. So Technorati does limited searches, because when I looked up the dates (1st Feb and 28 Feb 2006) I found the blogs.

I had the same problem with my research about al-Zarqarwi (or Zaqarwi). The story is there on 8 June 2006. Only that time Technorati could see the blog, but clicking on the Technorati link got a 404 Page not Found message.

After a lot of emails Google responded with a personalised Don't Know What Happened there message.

I am determined to remain on the CockUp side of the CockUp/Conspiracy divide, but it seems to me that there is a very big cock up inside Google or Technorati somewhere.
