Observer Nuclear Fumbly

Today's letter, to The Editor, The Observer

In your editorial (Nuclear Power debate - handle with care, 21st May) you rightly assert that the country needs an informed and wide-ranging debate on the nuclear issue.

Unfortunately, on the Letters page in the same issue, two of your panel on nuclear power, Karol Sikora and Sarfraz Mansoor, assume that nuclear power is not finite. In fact, the current high grade uranium ores could meet the world's present electricity needs for approximately four years. Low grade ores are not worth extracting from the point of view of global warming.

Yours &c

Richard Lawson
