"Time to Eat the Dog,"

O dear.

This is going to need some thinking about.

carbon pawprint of a pet dog (roughly the size of an alsatian), is twice that of a 4.6-litre Toyota Land Cruiser driven 10,000 kilometres a year.

Let's hope it's a spoof.
Please.

The book title ("Time to Eat the Dog") loses in diplomacy what it gains in impact.

If its not a spoof, this is going to lose us the Dog Vote. And the Cat Vote.

We need a Calming Statement asap.

er...

"The Green Party would reduce the carbon pawprint of the companion animal population through natural wastage and ensuring that no Unwanted Pets are Brought into this world. We recognise the great contribution to health and happiness that pets give to many people, and the deep emotional bonds not just with specific animals, but with animals in general. We will re-introduce Dog Licenses which the Conservatives so foolishly abolished. We recommend that each cat's diet should include at least one mouse a day". er...

...will that do?

It certainly throws a new light on the old Korean saying, "A dog is for Christmas and not just for dinner".

I hear that "long pig" is much tastier than dog - and very plentiful nowadays ...

Aargh! Dorothea, this is making it worse, not better. You are going to get us on the front page of the Daily Mail.

The figures (and basic premise) are so wrong-headed it's untrue.

They must have a book to sell or something.

Quite how it makes the popular press and blogosphere pretty much unchallenged says a lot about the standard of basic scientific knowledge in the UK. If you don't see the flaws in this, I wouldn't even comment on climate change science...

I am delighted to have your authoritative dismissal of their calculations as untrue. It must be wonderful to be able to dismiss a book with such complete assurance without having to go to the trouble of reading it.The fact that we can quote Anonymous as dismissing the calculations at is a great source of comfort to all of us.
